It's kind of like taking a test you're not prepared for. You probably didn't do well, but your relieved that it's over.
My first reaction: Fear. It seems to me that the new American dream is entitlement. One of my favorite columnists, Mark Steyn, put it like this, "Ask not what your country can do for you, demand it." Can they truly believe such campaign promises as free money, free healthcare, free college, and a Prius in every driveway? You know what they say about socialized medicine... if you think healthcare is expensive, wait until it's free. Personally, I don't want an appointment with the pediatrician to resemble a trip to the DMV. I heard a woman say she supported Obama because she "won't have to worry about filling her gas tank or paying her mortgage." Riiight. Democrat, Jim Moran, offered the most disturbing statement of the election, "We've been guided by a Republican administration who believes in the simplistic notion that people who have wealth are entitled to keep it." To that I reply, "the inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." -Winston Churchill
And of course, for me, the issue to end all issues...life. None of my babies were "punishments." A man that does not respect the life of unborn children, and votes 4 times to deny medical care to babies who survive abortions, will not earn my respect.
My second reaction: we had it coming. What we needed was conservatism, and McCain is no conservative. It's one thing to "cross the aisle," and another to put on their uniform. We didn't nominate a great alternative. The only chance he had was Sarah Palin. I believe we'll do better next time. It wasn't a total loss. The success of the ballot measures in California, Florida, and Arizona protecting marriage, gives me great hope. What an amazing victory!!!
I woke up today and for the first time in months, I didn't immediately turn on the news. I listened to Rush, as I always do, but I didn't even read my favorite political blogs. It was refreshing and just what I needed. Yes, I am disappointed with the outcome. However, I will pray for our new president, pray for the country that I love, and hope for the best.
